The Uncertain Stoveman is happy to announce that I have received my fresh supply of Chambers Rock Wool. I am offering two pounds of Wool to Chambers Host Board members at a reduced price of 15 bucks including postage. This is enough to do the oven door and have a little left over.
    Thanks, Sam

And check out the Chambers Literature here:

Hi Sam. How much wool is that for the $15? How much does a whole stove resto. require, if by chance, one were to replace all the old stuff with new?

Sam, are you going to add any more info to your safety thread, like a bit on how to make it all nice and neat looking after we drill a big hole in the oven floor, and how to reinsulate the resulting defect?

    Thanks,

    -Jenn

Hi Jenn, I forgot to say that the 15 buck offer is for 2 pounds, enough for the oven door and a little left over. The more you order, the cheaper it gets per pound, but the shipping cost will have to go up. I think it would take about 80 pounds to replace all the wool in the Chambers.

On the Safety, Chambers just drilled a 1" hole where the pilot is now and mounted a little bracket to hold the pilot. I don't have any photos of this at this time. I have had to put the safety thread on the Back Burner for now.

I saw your ebay writeup on the rockwool. The old rockwool you describe sounds horrible, and matched what I saw in my yellow stove when I opened up the oven door. It was truly disgusting. Luckily, my green stove's oven door isn't bad, so I plan on waiting on that one.

What are the chances that the rest of the rockwool in the yellow stove will be just as bad as the oven door's wool? Can you give me a rough estimate for the 80lbs. of rockwool, if I need to go that route?

You also mentioned an "asbestos web" in the ebay writeup. I didn't run into anything weblike in my yellow stove door when I pulled it apart, though. What is this, what does it look like, and do all stoves have it? I'm a bit hyper about asbestos..

    Sam,

I am interested in purchasing some of your Rock Wool at the member price you listed. Can you give me the details. Do I mail you a check or do you accept paypal. I've just received my service manual from Mr. White and will begin the long restoration process this weekend. I will be dismantleing and cleaning my stove and will be inspecting the Rock Wool that is there. I have one questions though.

What am I looking for, if I am checking to see if the Rock Wool currently in my stove is salvageable?

Anyway, sign me up for 2lbs at the $15.00 price. Let me know how you want me to pay for this.

    thanks again

Jenn, the Asbestos in the oven door looks like the wick in an old oil lamp. It is about 3" long and 1" wide and 1/8" thick. It is located between the oven front panel and the cast iron door frame, I have seen none installed or up to 3 installed. It seems to be added at the top of the door near the handle. They must have had some kind of problem with porcelain pops near the handle.

When you open the back panel on the door, look at the rock wool, It is very likely saturated around the edges of the door with grease and cooking fluids. It should be soft and fluffy. When it is full of grease, it will be hard and gummy.
